Media and Body Image

People in today’s society feel that they need to follow what the media portrays and anything different, is considered wrong and unethical. People feel the need to look at the media as a role model and a “fashion guide.” The look that seems to be trending these days is a thin, tall body image for females and a built, muscular body image for males. This is what is considered “attractive.” Although some people do not agree with this, it is the way society is looked at and the way society is expected to be. If someone isn’t thin, they get judged harshly and get teased immensely. They are to be considered fat and not with the norm. Over the years the media trends have changed dramatically especially from the 1800’s when having a large body meant that you were healthy and it was looked upon to be normal. Today’s society is the complete opposite. If you have a bigger body weight, you are to be considered unhealthy. People do not take into consideration eating disorders, genetics, and life style etc. Society is starting to see themselves in a way that they shouldn’t be. People are being brainwashed by the media without even realizing it. Interesting facts: 1) An estimated 1,000 women will die from anorexia this year. 2) A study found that adolescent girls are more scared of gaining weight that cancer, nuclear war, or losing their parents. 3) Eating disorders have increased by 400 percent since 1970. 4) The average person is exposed to at least 5,000 ads per day.
